 What is probably my last year here has started.

ข้าราชการเปลี่ยนสภาพ

ที่ทำงานเรียกฉันอย่างนั้น

เป็น mutant ชนิดหนึ่ง

ต่อสัญญาให้ฟรี ๆ มาสามครั้ง

สัญญาที่สาม กำลังจะสิ้นสุดลง

ถ้าไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง ตำแหน่งทางวิชาการ

ก็จะกลายเป็น ข้าราชการบำนาญ

วันนี้ฟังเทศนาหัวข้อ ทำเพื่อแม่ เลยนึกถึงสิ่งนี้

 ขอบคุณที่ได้มีโอกาสที่จะกล่าวถึงแม่ในวันนี้ 

แม่เป็นแม่ เป็น single mom มาก่อนที่จะมีวลีนี้ใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลาย 

แม่เป็นครู ตลอดชีวิตการทำงาน มีได้เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ พยายามไปหาข้อมูลจากกรมสามัญศึกษาที่โรงเรียนของแม่สังกัดอยู่ เขาบอกว่าไม่ได้มีการบันทึกไว้ แต่สิ่งเหล่านี้พระคัมภีร์เรียกว่าเป็น “หยากเหยื่อ” ไม่ได้มีความสำคัญอะไร โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเมื่อเทียบกับการที่แม่ได้รู้จักพระเจ้า 

แม่เป็นผู้เชื่อ ที่มั่นใจในการทรงสถิตของพระเจ้า แม้อาจจะไม่ได้อ่านพระคัมภีร์มากเท่าใครหลายคน แต่ตอนที่แม่ป่วยและต้องอยู่ที่บ้านคนเดียวตอนกลางวัน แม่จะบอกว่า ไม่ต้องห่วงนะ พระเจ้าอยู่ด้วย แม่อธิษฐานตลอด 

แม่เป็นยาย คิดว่านี่เป็นบทบาทที่แม่อาจจะชอบที่สุด จนเรียกตัวเองว่ายายกับทุกคน 

บางคนในที่นี้เคยได้ยินเรื่องนี้มาแล้วและรู้ว่ามดไม่ชอบ 

ก็แค่เรียกตัวเองว่า “แม่” กับลูก มันยากตรงไหน 

และจริง ๆ ก็มีอีกหลายอย่างที่แม่ทำและมดไม่ชอบ เช่น 

ไม่รับโทรศัพท์และไม่เคยโทรหา Missed call เป็น 10 ครั้ง ก็ไม่โทรกลับ 

ไม่ขอความช่วยเหลือจากลูก บอกว่าเกรงใจ 

แต่ขอความช่วยเหลือจากคนอื่น เพื่อนบ้าน พี่น้องที่โบสถ์ 

สิ่งเหล่านี้เข้าใจยาก มดไม่เข้าใจ 

แต่วันหนึ่ง ก็มาถึงจุดที่ตระหนักว่า ไม่ต้องเข้าใจ แต่ยอมรับ 

คือยอมที่พระเจ้าให้มีแม่อย่างนี้ 

ซึ่งไม่ใช่ไม่ดี แต่เป็นพระพร 

ขอแบ่งปัน 2 สิ่งที่แม่สอนมด 

สิ่งแรกคือการเสียสละ 

หลาย ๆ คนจะรู้ว่ามดชอบแมว มีแมว 6 ตัวที่บ้าน 

จริง ๆ ตั้งแต่เด็ก ๆ บ้านเราจะมีแมวมาตลอด 

แต่เพิ่งจะมารู้ภายใน 10 ปีมานี้เองว่า 

แม่ไม่ชอบความรู้สึกเวลาที่แมวมาคลอเคลีย 

เคล้าแข้งเคล้าขา มันไม่ได้น่าเอ็นดูสำหรับแม่ 

แต่แม่ก็เสียสละ เพราะลูกชอบ 

สิ่งที่สองคือ แม่สอนว่า อย่าอยากได้อะไรจากคนอื่น แล้วจะสบายใจ 

อะไรที่ว่านี้ไม่ใช่แค่สิ่งของหรือเงินทอง 

อาจเป็นสิ่งที่เป็นนามธรรม ข้อมูล ข่าวสาร ความรัก 

ถ้าใครรู้อะไร แล้วเขาไม่บอกเรา ก็แปลว่ามันไม่ได้เป็นสิ่งที่เราต้องรู้ 

ถ้าใครไม่รักเรา ก็ไม่เป็นไร 

พระเจ้ายังไม่บังคับให้ใครรักพระองค์เลย 

อาจจะฟังดูเหมือนอกหัก แต่จริง ๆ ประยุกต์ได้กับความรักทุกรูปแบบ 

แล้วการที่แม่ไม่โทรศัพท์มาหา ไม่ขอความช่วยเหลือจากมด ก็ไม่เป็นไร 

เพราะพระเจ้าจัดเตรียมคุณย่าของหลานให้โทรมาบอกมดว่า แม่ผอมมาก 

เมื่อพาแม่ไปหาหมอไม่กี่ครั้ง ก็ได้รู้ว่า มีน้ำในปอดข้างซ้าย 

เป็นของเหลวซึ่งเนื้อร้ายที่เยื่อหุ้มปอดผลิตออกมา 

 มดได้คุยกับแม่ก่อนจะรู้สิ่งนี้ว่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอะไร พระเจ้าก็รักษานะ 

วันแรกที่หมอบอกว่าพบเนื้อร้าย หมอพูดว่าไม่หายนะคะ 

มดกับแม่คุยกันใหม่ว่า ไม่ว่าจะอย่างไร พระเจ้าก็ดูแลนะ 

จริง ๆ พูดได้เต็มปากว่า การที่แม่ป่วยเป็นพระพรหรือพระพรที่ซ่อนอยู่ 

พระเจ้าให้โอกาสได้ใช้เวลากับแม่ ได้ทำสิ่งที่ลูกควรทำ 

แม่ไม่ต้องโทรมา แต่ได้คุยกัน เพราะแม่มาอยู่ที่บ้าน 

แม่ไม่ต้องขอความช่วยเหลือ แต่ลูกได้พาไปหาหมอ 

แม่ไม่ต้องเรียกตัวเองว่าแม่ แต่มดก็เป็นลูกแม่ 

สิ่งหนึ่งที่แม่ชอบทำคือการประกาศ การบอกเรื่องราวของพระเจ้ากับผู้ที่ยังไม่รู้จักพระองค์ 

ขอบคุณพระเจ้าที่ในวาระสุดท้าย ก่อนที่ร่างของแม่จะกลับไปเป็นผงคลีดิน 

แม่ก็ยังได้ประกาศบอกบางคนในที่นี้ที่อาจจะยังไม่รู้จักพระเจ้า ให้ได้ยินเรื่องราวของพระองค์ 

สำหรับใครที่อยากจะพบแม่อีก จะเรียกว่าชาติหน้าหรืออะไรก็ตาม 

ทางเดียวคือจะต้องติดตามพระเยซู 

ถ้าสนใจข้อมูลเพิ่ม มั่นใจว่าผู้เชื่อทุกคนในที่นี้ยินดีจะแบ่งปันเรื่องนี้ 

ถามใครก็ได้ 

สำหรับผู้ที่อาจจะไม่ได้รู้จักแม่เป็นการส่วนตัว และยังไม่รู้จักพระเจ้า 

และโดยเฉพาะ ถ้ายังมีแม่อยู่ ก็อยากจะแนะนำให้ท่านและแม่ของท่านรู้จักพระเจ้าเช่นกัน 

คือเมื่อแม่จากไป ก็มั่นใจมากว่าไปอยู่กับพระเจ้าแล้ว หายใจสะดวกแล้ว 

แต่มันก็ยังรู้สึกแปลก ๆ 

จะบอกความลับให้ว่า 

เวลาอยู่บ้าน ถ้าไม่ได้ทำอะไร ก็จะร้องเพลงนมัสการ ไม่ใช่แค่ในใจ แต่ออกเสียงดัง ๆ ด้วย 

ย้ำอีกครั้ง ถ้าสนใจข้อมูลเพิ่ม ถามใครก็ได้ 

สุดท้ายนี้ ขอขอบพระคุณพระเจ้าอีกครั้งสำหรับแม่ และขอพระเจ้าอวยพรทุกท่านค่ะ

concluding remarks

Thought I'd write a conclusion for the test. It wasn't fun being told what to write about. But having completed this suggested an ability to follow instructions, did it not? As you must have heard many times, before breaking the rules you need to know them well.

Share twenty things others should know about you

There is no such thing, but if you must. 

1. My name is Jiranthara, which means a land that lasts forever. 

2. I was born (eight weeks early) and raised in Thailand. 

3. My mom can calm you down whatever problem you have. 

4. My dad has a great sense of humour. 

5. I have only one younger sister, who is married with three children. 

6. She is taking good care of everyone in the family when I am away. 

7. My niece is gorgeous. 

8. My nephews are cute. 

9. If one can have more than one best friend, mine are Pom and Noy. 

10. We share our moments of madness and manage to keep each other sane. 

11. I've had three full-time jobs as a writer/translator, an international banking officer, and a lecturer. 

12. I started my PhD in January 2003. 

13. When I finish it, I'm going to teach again. 

14. I'm not doing a PhD for promotion at work; I just wanted to be away from work for a while, i.e. to be doing a different kind of work (to make it not sound as bad). 

15. I hope to submit my thesis in April (fingers crossed). 

16. A fortune teller, no two fortune tellers, told me I am getting married when I finish my PhD (with whom?) 

17. I think I've been learning a lot about myself over these past three years away from home (even more than about linguistics or time conceptualsation). 

18. I am spiritual but impatient. 

19. I care about other people, but not about what they think of me. 

20. I start knowing people, thinking they are good (some people prove me wrong, but they can't change me).

Outline your diet and exercise plan

Diet: Have more fish, and less chicken, pork, lamb, and beef , in this order. Achieve five (portions of fruits and vegetable) a day every day. Use magerine instead of butter (I'm a butter lover, though). Drink lots of water. No more than a mug of coffee a day (in case of more, it has to be decaf). 

 Exercise: Walking. (Don't look at me like that!) Cycling in the gym (if I manage to talk myself into going).

Write about your favorite hobby

It's reading. It would be my choice if I had to choose between reading and going to the movies and stick to it for the rest of my life. I haven't done a lot of reading lately, though. The last novel I finished was Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler, and that was a few months ago. I've been wanting to read Norwegian Wood seriously but can't go past the first few chapters every time I start it. If I submit my thesis on time, I should be able to read a few more novels before I go back to Thailand.

Describe a recent adventure

This is a tough one. I haven't done anything that is hazardous, questionable, unusual or exciting in nature lately. Well, actually, there was one thing that might have passed as unusual. But it is something I'd rather not write about. So here we go.

List your goals

Professional: 1. To email chapter 3 to my supervisor on Tuesday. 2. To have a pre-final draft of the whole thesis by the end of February. 3. To submit my thesis on time (ie by 24 April). 4. To be a good teacher. Personal: 1. To go back to Thailand for good by September. 2. To make each present moment a happy one. 3. To be helpful, loving and caring. 4. To follow this quote from the musical Fame: Two things make life worth living: to love and to work.

Keep a daily journal of your life

It was a long day. But perhaps it was so because it started late. Got a bit (ie a very tiny bit) of work done before going to the PhD seminar. It was a new format today, not the usual talk but three poster presentations were given. In the evening, there was a subject formal hall. Two high tables were set up in Sidgwick Hall. It seemed Newnham have a lot more MML, Linguistics and Oriental Studies students this year than last. Got back just in time to see Desperate Housewives. I liked how Bree said, I loved him deeply, without showing any emotions. The night ended with a call from Shirley, who is going to submit her thesis soon. I'm jealous!

snippets of nuts

This blog is still a test as I've given in to convenience and created another MSN space by the name of snippets of nuts at http://spaces.msn.com/members/js262/. Convenience refers to, e.g. how I can add and drag and drop modules in my space at will without having to try to decipher html. What kind of peanut butter do you like? Crunchy or smooth? Once I asked this around, and if you said you liked it smooth, I would say you prefer to have it easy in your life. Now perhaps this has to change because I'm the crunchy peanut butter lover. [If you've known me long enough, you might have been asked similar sorts of questions, e.g. would you like youself and your boy/girlfriend to be salt or pepper? would you like to be Pochahontas or Jasmine (for a girl)? would you like to be James Smith or Aladdin (for a boy)?]
